چکیده

-This paper presents a computational model and a practical algorithm for determining the three-dimensional orientation of a planar surface from visual texture information. The model consists of three parts: (1) a local spatial frequency based texture representation; (2) a model describing the projection of surface texture to image texture; and (3) a solution of the texture projection model for the surface orientation under an assumption of surface texture homogeneity. The algorithm first measures the dominant frequency at each image point using three wavelet-like transforms, and then finds the surface orientation that minimizes the variance of the image frequencies' backprojections. The algorithm is tested on photographs of real-world surfaces, exhibiting an average accuracy of better than 3 ° in slant and 4 ° in tilt. The current model and algorithm are more accurate, yet substantially simpler, than earlier versions of this approach. Shape from Texture: Fast Estimation of Planar Surface Orientation via Fourier Analysis

Shape from texture has received much attention in the past few decades. We propose a computationally efficient method to extract 3D planar surface orientation from the spectral variations of a visual texture. Under the assumption of homogeneity, the texture is represented by the novel method of identifying ridges of its Fourier transform. Local spatial frequencies are then computed using a mini...

Recovering Orientation of a Textured Planar Surface Using Wavelet Transform

Shape from texture has received a great deal of attention in the past few decades. This paper analyzes the spectral variations of texture spatial frequencies as a function of orientation and depth of a 3-D planar surface. Based on this relationship we attempt to derive an expression for the extraction of 3-D surface orientation using texture features alone. Using experimentation on simulated te...

Representation of 3-D surface orientation by velocity and disparity gradient cues in area MT.

Neural coding of the three-dimensional (3-D) orientation of planar surface patches may be an important intermediate step in constructing representations of complex 3-D surface structure. Spatial gradients of binocular disparity, image velocity, and texture provide potent cues to the 3-D orientation (tilt and slant) of planar surfaces. Previous studies have described neurons in both dorsal and v...

Adaptive Scale Filtering: A General Method for Obtaining Shape From Texture

We introduce adaptive scale ltering, a general method for deriving shape from texture under perspective projection without recourse to prior segmentation of the image into geometric texture elements (texels), and without thresholding of ltered images. If texels on a given surface can be identiied in an image then the orientation of that surface can be obtained 11]. However, there is no general ...

Shape from periodic texture using the spectrogram

Texture has long been recognized in computer vision as an important monocular shape cue, with texture gradients yielding information on surface orientation. A more recent trend is the analysis of images in terms of local spatial frequencies, where each pixel has associated with it its own spatial frequency distribution. This has proven to be a successful method of reasoning about and exploiting...
